Meet The Team - Courtney Cheshire

Courtney has been working with Rianne Pictures since 2015.

Continuing our month of May articles all about our team, next up is Courtney Cheshire our graphic designer, who has been creating posters, animation, title credits and so much more since 2015. Courtney met founder Caris Rianne on Tumblr back in 2013 and you can hear her southern charm frequently on our podcast. Here she tells us a little bit about herself, her love for The Young Pope and which HBO show everyone has seen except her!

Who would you most like to invite to dinner (dead or alive) and why?

I’d really love to meet Hildegard of Bingen. She was a nun alive in the middle ages and she had these intense visions of God and that allowed her to write, draw, preach, and compose music; all things women weren’t really allowed to do. She was an early pioneer in gynaecology and advocated for women on their periods to be allowed to go to church. I’d just love to hear her perspective on being a woman with an ounce of power in a time when they had so little. If I got to bring her to any restaurant I’d take her to this Italian place that just closed in Royal Oak, Michigan called Pasquale's. It’s right down the road from a scary basilica. I think she’d like it.

Marjane Satrapi

What is your bucket list travel destination?

I would really love to go to Italy and explore all the art and religious history.

I know the best spot in ______ for ____

I know the best spot in Statesboro for bar trivia. It’s a place called Gnat’s Landing which is so Georgia it hurts.

A womxn in film who’s work inspires you and why?

I really admire Marjane Satrapi. Her ability to combine her comics and film is wonderful and she has a fantastic ability to world build.

My favourite podcast is ….

Last Podcast on the Left! I love all things true crime and they’ve even broadened my horizons into aliens and conspiracy theory. It’s all good fun. I recommend their series on Richard Chase!

The first concert/gig I ever went to was…….

My folks took me to see Heart when I was like 3!

What is next-up on your watch-list?

It’s a bit far off, but I’m really looking forward to The Third Day coming out on HBO in May. I love Jude Law and the general Wicker Man vibes its giving off!

Jude Law in The Third Day (HBO)

Shuffle your playlist - no cheating! What are the first three songs?

Killer by Salem, Tinseltown Swimming in Blood by Destroyer, With This Love (Choir) from The Last Temptation of Christ by Peter Gabriel

If you had an extra hour of free time a day, how would you use it?

Probably chat with my parents or friends.

What skill would you most like to learn?

I’d love to learn how to play the banjo.

Name a genre that best describe your taste…

I’ve made up a genre that I haven’t given a name yet, but it's those films from the late 80s/early 90s that really have no genre, but are about Christianity in a very non-Christian sense and feel kind of soft (think Stigmata, The Prophecy, The Seventh Sign, and Michael). That’s ALL me.

Name one thing you love that you want everyone to know about…

The Young Pope! It always shocks me how few people I know have seen it. Paolo Sorrentino is a masterful writer and director and Jude Law plays the hell out of Lenny Belardo (the titular young Pope), possibly the best written character in the history of fiction. WATCH IT!

Name one thing that you would like to achieve this year, We’re all about aspirations and manifesting our goals!

I’d like to continue working on museum design, it's something I started late 2019 and I’ve fallen in love with.

You’re redecorating your home or office space. Name your preferred aesthetic…

I don’t have a word for it but the way the music video for Losing My Religion by REM looks.

A film/tv show/documentary everyone loves that you’ve never seen? (It’s okay, nobody’s seen everything!)

I’ve never watched Sopranos!

What’s something that you’re an absolute pro at?

Sorting sexy fictional priests in my head.

What would be the title of a book about your life?

Accidental Madonna (which makes me sound like a tool)

What’s an underrated moment from a film or tv show that you think about all the time?

It’s recent, but there’s a moment in The New Pope where Lenny slams a table and states “I cannot stand the thought of a child suffering” after he read a letter from a child upset about his illness and I BURST into tears. It was so powerful. This is another chance for me to plug the Young/New Pope!

I predict that this decade will be big for…..

I think folk horror is BACK and I’m here for it.

Finally, we’re huge advocates for self-care and looking after our wellbeing. What are three things you do to practice self-care?

Bake cookies, call my parents, watch one of my favorite films.
