Hello April

Another month, another top ten list featuring tv shows, films, books and more all recommended by our team. Find out what we are excited for and what we’ve been loving recently.

Don’t forget submissions for our upcoming third Women X Film Festival are open! You can submit your short film via Filmfreeway here and we have free entry for North East filmmakers!

Benedetta - In cinemas

Top Ten

1. Benedetta - In cinemas
It’s felt like a long wait but it’s almost over! After screening at multiple international festivals, Benedetta is out in UK cinemas this month. The film is based on a true story, set in 17th century Italy following a nun who is plagued by disturbing visions and ends up involved in a love affair with another woman.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

2. Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
If you’re looking for a good book to check out, Mexican Gothic should be next on your list. It’s an amazing gothic horror/thriller set in 1950s Mexico. Both the story and the characters are fantastic and there is a truly great twist - Ashton fully recommends.

3. Heartstopper - Netflix
I am much too excited about this! Heartstopper is adapted from the graphic novel series of the same name by Alice Oseman. The books are the equivalent of a warm hug from a friends and I expect the show will be similar. It’s a young adult, queer, coming-of-age story with a truly wonderful bunch of characters (and the casting looks amazing). Heartstopper arrives on Netflix on 22 April.

4. The Northman - In cinemas
Emily is more than ready to watch The Northman, mainly to see Björk in a Robert Eggers film (and who can blame her). The film is an action-adventure epic with a fantastic cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy and many many more. You can catch this in the UK cinemas from 15 April.

The Dropout - Disney+

5. The Dropout - Disney+
Streaming now on Disney+, The Dropout is a series based on the podcast of the same name about Elizabeth Holmes and the rise and fall of her company, Theranos. Lauren is loving it, especially Amanda Seyfried’s performance as Holmes - she’s almost too good at portraying her, it’s uncanny!

6. Twin Flames - Wondery
Ashton has another of her podcast recs - this month it’s Wondery’s Twin Flames, narrated by the fab Stephanie Beatriz. It’s all about a Youtuber couple that started a ‘cult’ which encouraged people to pursue their true loves to the point of restraining orders - it’s short but it’s wild.

Minari - NOW

7. Minari - NOW
I’m a fiend for watching films late but I finally caught Minari after wanting to catch it since it was released. It’s a beautiful film with varied and complex familial relationships that are perfectly depicted. The whole cast is spectacular - Steven Yeun obviously amazing as always.

8. Ultimatum: Marry or Move On - Netflix
If you, like Neha, want a lot of mess and drama in your tv shows, look no further than Ultimatum: Marry or Move On. Out on 6 April, this new show from the creators of Love is Blind features long term/established couples who have to either get married or break up, one person in the relationship wanting marriage and the other unsure, forcing a decision to be made…

The Baby - Samia

9. The Baby - Samia
An album I’ve been loving over the last couple of months is debut album from Samia, The Baby. It’s a very chill listen with so many beautiful songs + memorable lyrics. My personal favourite songs are Big Wheel, Triptych, Limbo Bitch, and Is There Something in the Movies? (which alludes to the death of Brittany Murphy who was a close friend of Samia’s family).

10. Bridgerton season 2 - Netflix
Many of our team love Bridgerton and are thrilled it’s been back on our screens! The hugely popular period drama has returned with more romance, drama and scandal. It’s time to jump back into it if you haven’t already as it returned to Netflix in late March!

Do let us know if you have any recommendations for us to check out, we’d love to know what you’ve been enjoying too!
